Hawks keeping Drew as coach for next season

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ATLANTA — Larry Drew is returning for his third season as the Atlanta Hawks’ coach despite the team’s first-round exit from the playoffs.

The Hawks announced Friday the team is exercising its option on Drew’s contract for next season.

“Larry did an outstanding job this season in guiding our team to the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference, despite a condensed schedule and unfortunate injuries,” said general manager Rick Sund.

“The Hawks have reached the post-season in each of his years on the bench, and we feel Larry’s experience, expertise and dedication to the game were a key ingredient to our success.”

Drew led the Hawks to a 40-26 regular-season record before the team lost to the Boston Celtics in six games in the first round of the playoffs. It was a step back for the franchise after three straight second-round appearances.

Atlanta had the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference despite losing All-Star centre Al Horford for all but 11 games of the regular season. Horford returned in Game 4 of the Celtics series.

The Hawks also lost Joe Johnson, Zaza Pachulia, Kirk Hinrich and other players for stretches of six or more games.

“This group, we never really got to show what we’re capable of,” Horford said last week.

Pachulia, who was Horford’s top backup, missed the Celtics series with a chipped bone in his left foot. Third-string centre Jason Collins started the first four games of the series.

Drew said he and his staff “endured a lot of unexpected things.”

“Obviously when you lose an All-Star at the beginning of the season, you have to make some adjustments and you’ve got to kind of change your way of thinking of how you deal with the team now,” Drew said last week. “Certainly when you have factored a guy in for the entire season and then he won’t be there, you’ve got to change some things around, particularly the mindset of the rest of the team.”

Drew said he did a good job of keeping the team playing hard.

“It’s something I take a lot of pride in and spend a lot of time on,” he said. “Player relationships are very important and how you deal with it, how you deal with your best player all the way down to the guy who may not dress out during games.

“I thought I did a good job with that. I thought my staff did a good job with that. We can only control so much, but the one thing we tried to control is that those guys when they come to that gym they come out and play hard for you every single night, and I thought we got that.”

Drew is 84-64 in two regular seasons and 8-10 in the playoffs. The Hawks were 17-16 on the road this season, the team’s first winning record away from Atlanta in 13 years.

The team’s five starters and Pachulia are under contract for next season. Nine players are free agents, and Sund’s contract expires on June 30.

<p>	ATLANTA — Al Horford had hoped to give the Atlanta Hawks a boost in the playoffs.
<p>Now he knows that won’t be possible, at least not in the opening round.</p>
<p>The All-Star center said Wednesday he’s definitely out for the best-of-seven series against Boston, which begins this weekend. The Hawks will get home-court if they win their regular-season finale against Dallas tonight, or if the Celtics lose their last game to Milwaukee. </p>
<p>“You obviously want to be there for your team and try to help them,” Horford said after taking some shots on his own at the Philips Arena practice court. “But I realized I’m not nearly where I need to be or want to be to give the team anything.”</p>
<p>Horford, one of Atlanta’s key players along with Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, has missed most of the season recovering from surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle. The team has persevered without him, going into its final game clinging to the fourth-best record in the East. </p>
<p>All along, though, the Hawks held out hope that Horford might be healthy enough to give the team a boost in the playoffs. He was especially eager to return after his replacement, Zaza Pachulia, went down a couple of weeks ago with a sprained left foot, casting doubt on whether he’ll be able to go in the playoffs. Third-stringer Jason Collins has been filling in as the starting center, though he’s rarely on the court at crucial points in the game. </p>
<p>After practicing 4-on-4 Monday, Horford was optimistic about returning to face the Celtics. But, when he woke up sore and weak the next day, he was forced to concede that his left arm just isn’t strong enough to endure the wear-and-tear of a grueling playoff series.</p>
<p>“We kind of decided it’s best for me to take some time off, keep working and just see how I progress,” Horford said. “It’s frustrating for me. I want to play. I want to get out there with the guys. I know what it’s all about. This is the time of year you play for. By my body is just not responding with me. I can’t do it.”</p>
<p>Even under the best of circumstances, Horford knew he wouldn’t be able to get all his strength back until the summer. But he tried to persuade himself that he had recovered enough to at least give the Hawks some decent minutes in the playoffs. </p>
<p>Realistically, that won’t be possible in the opening round. The 6-foot-10 Horford is already a bit undersized for his position, and there’s no way he could bang in the lane with essentially one arm.</p>
<p>“I have very, very little strength,” he conceded. “The playoffs are intense. The intensity goes way up. I can go in and play with the guys in practice here. I might even be able to play in a regular-season game. But the playoffs are different. The way I play, to be most effective to the team, I’m not at that point yet.”</p>
<p>Horford is still hoping to play in the second round if the Hawks advance. </p>
<p>“I’m learning from this,” he said. “Hopefully this will make me a better player. I’ll be much more motivated when I come back, I’ll tell you that much, whenever it is. I just have to keep working and see what happens.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Joe Johnson scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and eight Atlanta players scored in double digits in the Hawks’ 116-96 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday night.

The Hawks broke open the game in the third quarter by shooting 17 of 23 from the field while scoring a season-high 38 points. They won their third straight and remained in second place in the Southeast Division, ahead of the struggling Orlando Magic.

Zaza Pachulia had 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Jannero Pargo had 15 points and nine assists for the Hawks. Ivan Johnson added 17 points.

Corey Higgins, the son of Charlotte president of basketball operations Rod Higgins, scored a career-high 22 points for the Bobcats, who’ve lost 11 straight.

The Bobcats need to win three of their remaining 12 games to reach the 10-win plateau.

Atlanta (34-23) currently owns the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference.

The Hawks scored 56 points in the paint and outrebounded the Bobcats 42-31.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 23-19 lead in the first quarter behind nine early points from Byron Mullens, who carried over the momentum early on from his career-high, 31-point effort Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks.

But the Hawks began to take over in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 29-13 to take a 12-point lead at halftime behind solid play off the bench from Pargo, Marvin Williams, Ivan Johnson and Willie Green. The reserves played so well that coach Larry Drew stuck with them for most of the second quarter.

The third quarter has been a trouble spot for the Bobcats all season and it stung them again.

The Hawks went on a 12-2 run to open the second half to quickly build a 22-point lead. They hit 11 of their first 12 shots from the field in the period, many of those on uncontested layups.

The Bobcats fought back to trim the lead to 12 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t close the gap any further.

NOTES: The Bobcats were without guards D.J. Augustin, and Reggie Williams, as well as forward Eduardo Najera. Najera had surgery Saturday to repair a frontal bone fracture and coach Paul Silas says he’s not expected to play for the remainder of the season.

Gotta run!.

Ellis breaks out to lead Bucks past Hawks

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MILWAUKEE — Monta Ellis scored 33 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, as the Milwaukee Bucks held off the Atlanta Hawks 108-101 on Tuesday night.

Brandon Jennings added 18 points for the Bucks, who moved to within two games of the idle New York Knicks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ellis, who has struggled since coming over in a trade from Golden State on March 14, tied a season low with four points against the Knicks on Monday. On Tuesday, he made 15-of-24 shots, including 7-of-9 in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory with a 15-foot jumper with 1:27 remaining. He added eight assists.

Josh Smith led the Hawks with 30 points and 18 rebounds. Joe Johnson finished with 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

The Hawks had 22 turnovers.

The Bucks were without two key players, forwards Ersan Ilyasova (back spasms) and Carlos Delfino (right groin injury). Coach Scott Skiles called both “day to day” before the game.

The Bucks led 55-46 at halftime, but the Hawks used a 20-6 run over the last 6:58 of the third to take a 79-78 lead. The Hawks made 12-of-17 shots in the period. The Bucks missed their last five shots of the quarter.

Atlanta, which had been seeking their season-high fifth consecutive win, went up 81-78 with a basket to open the fourth, but Ellis had a steal and a break-away dunk, two jump shots and a free throw in the first five minutes of the period to put Milwaukee up 89-85.

The score was tied at 91 when Mike Dunleavy hit a 3 with 4:31 remaining. The Bucks never trailed again, as Ellis followed with a layup and jumper to make it 98-91.

Rookie Ivan Johnson had a career-high 17 points for Atlanta.

The Bucks’ last seven wins had come against teams with a losing record, and they had not beaten a team above .500 since March 5.

It was the fifth game in six nights for the Bucks, who were coming off an 89-80 defeat to the depleted Knicks. The Hawks were coming off a 139-133 four-overtime victory over Utah on Sunday.

Joe Johnson left Tuesday’s game less than three minutes in and received two stitches in his lip, the team said. He returned at the 8:59 mark of the second.

The Bucks led by as many as 17 in the first half and 55-46 at halftime. Smith scored 13 points in the second quarter, and Johnson had just two points in the half on 1-of-5 shooting.

Notes: Luc Mbah a Moute and Ekpe Udoh started in place of Ilysova and Delfino. For Udoh, it was his first start since being dealt from Golden State in the Ellis trade. . The 24-point first-half scoring outburst by the Bucks’ Mike Dunleavy on Monday night against the Knicks marked the most points scored by a reserve in a half this season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau

Atlanta Hawks top Utah Jazz in four overtimes

The Timberwolves' Kevin Love followed up his 51-point effort with 30 points and 21 rebounds against Corey Brewer and the Nuggets.

Jim Mone/Associated Press

The Timberwolves’ Kevin Love followed up his 51-point effort with 30 points and 21 rebounds against Corey Brewer and the Nuggets.

Hawks 139, Jazz 133

ATLANTA — Joe Johnson was exhausted by the time the Hawks and Utah had dragged each other into a fourth overtime — in Atlanta’s third game in three nights, no less.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “I just had to laugh it off. I’ve never played in a game like that.”

Johnson scored 37 points, Josh Smith had 22 and the Hawks ended Utah’s six-game winning streak with a victory in the NBA’s first quadruple-overtime game since 1997.

The four overtimes tied for the third-longest game in NBA history. It was the ninth NBA game to go four OTs and the first since Phoenix beat Portland 140-139 on Nov. 14, 1997.

Al Jefferson finished with 28 points and 17 rebounds, and Paul Millsap had 25 points and 13 boards for the Jazz before both players fouled out in the final overtime.

“We’ll take a moral victory out of this one,” Millsap said. “This was a good ball team we played tonight. They played excellent defense. We just didn’t get it done.”

Atlanta has won four straight and six of seven. The Hawks improved to 30-20 and moved one-half game ahead of Indiana for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

“It would happen on the third (straight night), but it shows the toughness of this ballclub to be able to push through that many overtimes and come out victorious,” said Smith, who fouled out with 1:57 left in the first overtime. “It was a special win, and I think we’ll probably appreciate this win more so than any other win during the season thus far.”

Johnson ended the first quarter with 18 points after going 8 of 8 in the period. He missed eight of his next nine shots, including a potential game-winning runner with 3 seconds left in regulation, before hitting a 3-pointer that forced the third overtime.

With 16.9 seconds remaining in the fourth OT, Johnson’s 20-foot jumper over C.J. Miles gave the Hawks a 135-131 lead.

“I got some great looks in that first quarter,” Johnson said. “I got into a rhythm early and for whatever reason it took me a little while to get that rhythm back, but other guys stepped up and made plays.”

Jeff Teague, who had 18 points and nine assists, added a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go to make it 137-133. Johnson’s two free throws sealed the victory with 5.5 seconds remaining.

T’wolves 117, Nuggets 100

MINNEAPOLIS — Kevin Love won’t let Minnesota go down without a fight. Denver could use a little of the same punch right now. Love followed up his 51-point game with 30 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Timberwolves over the Nuggets.

“I think we used to call him kind of a poor man’s Larry Bird,” Denver coach George Karl said. “I think you can take ‘poor man’s’ off that comparison now. His ability to rebound is incredible and his offensive tools and skills are growing.”

Luke Ridnour had 25 points and six assists, and Wayne Ellington added 17 points for the Timberwolves, who are trying to stay relevant in the Western Conference playoff race.

The Wolves entered the game 31/2 games behind Denver for the eighth spot. The Wolves meet the Grizzlies on Tuesday night at FedExForum.

Thunder 103, Heat 87

OKLAHOMA CITY — Kevin Durant had 28 points, nine rebounds and tied his season-high with eight assists, Kendrick Perkins added a season-best 16 points and Oklahoma City opened a difficult stretch in its schedule by beating Miami. The two title contenders opened the day tied for the second-best record in the NBA, three games behind the Chicago Bulls in the race for the top overall seed in the playoffs. Oklahoma City claimed this one, getting a season-high 13 steals and forcing Miami into 21 turnovers that led to 28 Thunder points. Dwyane Wade led Miami with 22 points but also committed a season-worst six turnovers. LeBron James had 17 points, seven assists and four turnovers.

Spurs 93, 76ers 76

SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker scored 21 points and San Antonio beat Philadelphia.

DeJuan Blair added 19 points for the Spurs, who won for the seventh time in eight games and swept the season series with the 76ers. Philadelphia lost for the second time in its last four games. Elton Brand led the 76ers with 12 points.

Celtics 88, Wizards 76

BOSTON — Avery Bradley scored a career-high 23 points, and Paul Pierce had 21 points and eight rebounds as Boston beat Washington. Boston was without guards Ray Allen (ankle) and Mickael Pietrus (head injury) but still had plenty to hold off the struggling Wizards. Rajon Rondo had 11 assists, while Kevin Garnett finished with 10 points and six assists for the Celtics, who shot 22 for 34 (65 percent) in the first half. Jordan Crawford scored 20 points, and Kevin Seraphin had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Washington.

Suns 108, Cavaliers 83

CLEVELAND — Marcin Gortat and Markieff Morris scored 22 points apiece and Phoenix never trailed against Cleveland. Steve Nash added 13 assists for the Suns, who have won six of eight to get back into the Western Conference playoff race. Phoenix improved to 11-4 since the All-Star break. Rookie Kyrie Irving scored 16 points for Cleveland, which has lost six of seven.

Blazers 90, Warriors 87

PORTLAND, Ore .– Raymond Felton scored 24 points and LaMarcus Aldridge had 18, including a fadeaway jumper and two free throws that proved the difference in the final minute, leading Portland over Golden State. Portland evened its record to 3-3 since Kaleb Canales replaced the fired Nate McMillan as head coach.

Phoenix Suns Fall To Atlanta Hawks, 101-99

Read More: Josh Smith (F – ATL), Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers

The Phoenix Suns were well on their way to a needed home win when the wheels once again fell off in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Hawks. The game started about as well as it could from the offensive end with the Suns shooting 68 percent in the first half to build a nine point lead.

They extended that lead to 15 in the third but just as in Monday’s loss to the Warriors, the Suns gave up a run led by an opposing forward, Josh Smith in this case, and struggled to score in the final quarter.

That 15-point lead for the home team was turned into a 9-point lead for the visiting Hawks before a late Suns surge cut it to three with under 20 seconds to go. A Channing Frye three had a chance to tie the game but rimmed off the front of the iron.

“It’s one of those deals where we play good basketball for 35 (or) 38 minutes but it’s a 48 minute game,” Alvin Gentry said in his press conference.

Grant Hill (18 points, 6 rebounds) did an amazing job shutting down Joe Johnson (6 points, 2-10 shooting) but the athletic and skilled Josh Smith was a beast all over the court. He finished with 30 points, 17 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocks and went 2-3 from three. Willie Green chipped in 20 with 5-8 from three for the Hawks.

Steve Nash had the night off in Denver on Tuesday and looked fresh early but by the end of the game the fourth in five days seemed to catch up to him. Nash had 15 points and 8 assists at half time and finished with 22 and 16 in 39 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Suns were held to 43 percent shooting with just four of their 22 points coming in the paint. Six fourth quarter turnovers (and 20 for the game) didn’t help their cause either.

The Hawks used a zone defense to keep the Suns outside of the paint and Phoenix couldn’t make them pay by hitting enough outside shots. They went just 3-12 from three in the second half. When the Suns used the zone, Atlanta was able to knock down their shots.

The Suns now fall to 12-18 and have one day off before heading to L.A. to face the Lakers.

Matt Bonner, DeJuan Blair pace San Antonio…

Published: Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 9:22 p.m. MST

By Paul J. Weber, Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO — Matt Bonner and DeJuan Blair both scored 17 points, and the San Antonio Spurs handed the surging Atlanta Hawks their first lopsided loss of the season, 105-83 on Wednesday night.

Tiago Splitter added 16 points for the Spurs, who relished a convincing win over the Southeast Division leaders after losing two of their previous three and barely squeaking past woeful New Orleans on Monday night.

Jeff Teague led Atlanta with 22 points. Kirk Hinrich made his season debut, after missing 18 games recovering from shoulder surgery, and scored seven points in 14 minutes.

Joe Johnson had just 10 points for Atlanta. The 22-point blowout was a rare embarrassment for the Hawks (13-6), who had won six of seven.

Atlanta’s few losses this season included a triple-overtime heartbreaker to LeBron James and Miami, and a two-point defeat to Derrick Rose and Chicago.

The Hawks got manhandled this time, largely by an underperforming outfit of San Antonio role players.

Tony Parker had 15 points, and Tim Duncan scored just six and grabbed 11 rebounds. San Antonio’s reserves outscored the Hawks bench players 51-27.

Johnson, who had averaged 23 points in Atlanta’s previous seven games, shot just 5 of 12 from the floor. Josh Smith added 13 points on 6 of 17 shooting.

The Spurs shot 51 percent from the floor, marking the first time this season that Atlanta has allowed an opponent to make more than half its shots.

The Spurs have been practically auditioning scorers without Manu Ginobili, who could miss at least another month because of a broken left hand. Parker has been the lone constant on offense, yet even the 29-year-old star entered the game shooting his lowest percentage (46 percent) in a half-decade.

He stumbled early against the Hawks and finished 5 of 13. The reserves picked up the slack.

Bonner, the 3-point gunner stumbling through a career-worst shooting slump, eclipsed double digits for only the third time this season and tied a season high with five 3s. Splitter, who scored a career-high 25 points in a weekend loss to Houston, was in double figures for the fifth straight game.

Even little-used rookie point guard Cory Joseph scored a season-best eight points in 19 minutes. The Spurs started the second quarter with the combination of Joseph, Splitter, Bonner, Gary Neal and Danny Green, who made for a surprising scoring unit that doubled San Antonio’s lead to 41-28 in a span of six minutes.

Green finished with 10 points.

The Spurs improved to 10-1 at home, but are 2-6 on the road. They have only three more home games before they spend much of February away because of an annual Rodeo Road Trip.

Notes: The Hawks haven’t beaten the Spurs on the road since Duncan entered the NBA in 1997.

</p></div>
</div>
<p>	ATLANTA — Joe Johnson bounced back from a sluggish start to turn in his usual game at the offensive end.
<p>Then he came up with a huge defensive play that carried the Atlanta Hawks to another victory.</p>
<p>Johnson scored 24 points and surprised Portland by stealing the ball with just over a minute remaining, leading the Hawks to their fourth straight win since losing All-Star center Al Horford, 92-89 over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.</p>
<p>The Hawks, taking over first place in the Southeast Division from Orlando, closed the third period on a 14-0 run, but the Trail Blazers responded with a 13-0 spurt starting the fourth to tie the game. It was tight the rest of the way. In the end, Atlanta pulled out another gutsy win, having won its last three by a total of 14 points. </p>
<p>“I think when Al went out, it just brought us tighter,” Jeff Teague said.</p>
<p>Atlanta was up 84-80 when a wild sequence went the home team’s way. Jamal Crawford missed on a drive, but Wesley Matthews picked off an outlet pass to apparently give the Blazers another chance. Not so fast. Johnson hustled up behind Matthews to steal it back, then lobbed to Teague for a dunk with 1:25 remaining.</p>
<p>“I don’t know if he thought I wasn’t going to try to get back into the play, but his awareness of me coming from behind — well, he didn’t have any,” Johnson said. “I just snuck up and was able to tap it. I didn’t want to tap it forward where they could still get it. I kind of wanted to hit it where I could get it. I did. And I had Jeff Teague running down the wing. I know he can fly, so I just threw it up there and he went and got it.”</p>
<p>Crawford, who led the Blazers with 22 points in his return to Atlanta, hit a last-gasp 3-pointer but the Hawks held on. </p>
<p>“Right now, it seems like we’re playing harder when we get down instead of playing that way from the beginning of the game,” Crawford said. “That makes it tougher on us to come back and pull out games.”</p>
<p>Atlanta hasn’t folded since Horford went down last week with a torn pectoral muscle, which will keep him out for most, if not the rest, of the regular season. He underwent surgery Tuesday and managed to get off a tweet congratulating his teammates: “Another solid win. Let’s keep getting better. Go Hawks!”</p>
<p>Johnson missed his first five shots and was still scoreless with less than 3 minutes to go in the first half. Then, suddenly, he ripped off three straight jumpers — including a pair of 3s — and knocked down a couple of free throws. The 10-point outburst sparked a 12-4 spurt that pushed the Hawks to a double-digit lead. </p>
<p>Atlanta led 51-42 at the break.</p>
<p>“That’s all it takes. Just see a couple go in the basket,” Johnson said, breaking into a slight smile.</p>
<p>Portland seized the momentum coming out of the locker room, surging into the lead for the first time since late in the opening quarter. Gerald Wallace made a short hook with 4:07 to play in the third, putting the Blazers up 62-61. They didn’t score again in the quarter, the Hawks racing to a 75-62 lead.</p>
<p>But the see-saw game suddenly turned Portland’s way again. Crawford led the comeback in a role that must’ve looked familiar to Atlanta fans who cheered him the last two years when he played for the Hawks, winning the Sixth Man Award in 2010. He’s filling the same role for the Blazers, but couldn’t hit quite enough of his 22 shots to beat his old team.</p>
<p>“I knew he was coming,” Atlanta’s Josh Smith said. “He’s an emotional player. He probably still wants to be here. It would be nice to still see him in a Hawks uniform, but this is a business.”</p>
<p>At one point, Crawford glanced over to watch Hawks coach Larry Drew calling a play, trying to get a defensive edge. The Blazers guard could’ve used more help from his teammates. LaMarcus Aldridge added 20 points, but only four of those came in the final quarter, helping send the Blazers to their fourth loss in the last five games after a 7-2 start.</p>
<p>“I couldn’t get my shot off,” Aldridge said. “I definitely didn’t play big down the stretch. We’ve got to figure this out before things get bad.”</p>
<p>The Hawks were more balanced. Smith had 17 points, plus 11 rebounds, while Teague chipped in with 13 points and Marvin Williams added 12. All five players off the Atlanta bench also made the scoresheet.</p>
<p>The Hawks have won six straight over the Trail Blazers, whose last win against Atlanta came on Feb. 20, 2009</p>
<p><b>NOTES:</b> Portland’s Nicolas Batum was taken to a hospital at halftime after being accidentally poked in his left eye by Tracy McGrady. Batum was back with the team afterward but seeing double. He’ll be checked again in three days. … Trevor Bayne, last year’s surprise winner of the Daytona 500, attended his first NBA game. Asked his expectations for the season-opening NASCAR race, about a month away, he said, “We have to win it again, right? Expectations are high. We’ve got to live up to them.” … The Trail Blazers went without Marcus Camby, who missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle). Coach Nate McMillan said before the game that Camby would only play in an emergency. … Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn sat courtside at Philips Arena. The actors are in Atlanta filming more scenes for the movie “Neighborhood Watch,” which filmed over the fall at various sites in Cobb County, including the Marietta Square and Campbell High School. </p>

Atlanta Hawks rally from 18 down, beat Minnesota…

Published: Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 8:59 p.m. MST

By George Henry, Associated Press

ATLANTA — Joe Johnson wasn’t too concerned when Atlanta trailed Minnesota by 18 points late in the third quarter.

He could sense the Hawks were finally figuring out how to defend Kevin Love.

“We started focusing in on him and doubling him a lot more and trying to make it tough for him, but he’s a load down there, man,” Johnson said. “He did a great job of keeping them in the ballgame. He’s a hell of a player.”

Johnson scored 25 points, Ivan Johnson hit the clinching free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining and the Hawks rallied from 18 points down to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 93-91 on Saturday night.

Love missed a potential game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer, but finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds for Minnesota, which was trying to win consecutive road games for the first time since last Feb. 7-8 at New Orleans and Houston. The Timberwolves were coming off a seven-point victory Friday against the Hornets.

“It’s my fourth year in the league, so I’ve had a lot of teams come back us, especially last year, so you never feel like a game is over no matter how far ahead you are,” Love said. “‘We started to shoot too many jump shots and didn’t get the ball inside enough. Plus, it seemed like they hit every single shot down the stretch.”

Jeff Teague added 20 points and 10 assists for the Hawks, who overcame a season-high 20 turnovers to win their second straight game after losing Al Horford to a torn pectoral muscle that will sideline the starting center for three to four months.

“Every game is not going to be perfect,” Joe Johnson said. “You’re going to have to win them ugly sometimes, and tonight was definitely an ugly game. I’m just glad we came out on top.”

Rookie Ricky Rubio, starting his second game in the last two nights, had 18 points and 12 assists for Minnesota. With 3:40 left in the third quarter, Rubio’s 12-foot runner from the left baseline gave the Timberwolves the game’s biggest lead at 18.

Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman was nearly speechless after watching a fourth quarter in which his team was outscored 30-20, was outrebounded 12-8 and committed five turnovers to the Hawks’ two.

There were five lead changes and the score was tied six times in the final period, but Minnesota never led after Love’s two free throws made it 86-84 with 2:41 remaining.

“I don’t have anything to say,” Adelman said. “Our guys did everything they could to win that game and it just didn’t happen. That’s all I have to say.”

Atlanta brought in Ivan Johnson and Jason Collins to contest Love inside and used a zone defense to close the passing lanes, helping the Hawks go on a 23-2 run. Teague’s 3 capped the run with 8:48 remaining to put the Hawks up 76-73 and give them a lead for the first time since the game’s first minute.

Atlanta Hawks roll past Charlotte Bobcats

The Hawks’ Josh Smith scored 30 points Thursday night against Boris Diaw and the Bobcats.

Hawks 111, Bobcats 81

ATLANTA — Before the Atlanta Hawks took the court, Joe Johnson whispered a message to teammates Josh Smith and Jeff Teague.

“We have to take ownership,” Johnson said, “at both ends of the court.”

Clearly, they were listening.

Smith scored 30 points, Johnson added 23 and Teague chipped in with 16, leading the Hawks to a 111-81 rout of the Charlotte Bobcats on Thursday night in Atlanta’s first game without All-Star center Al Horford.

The Hawks learned earlier in the day that Horford, a leader on and off the court, will miss at least three months after tearing the pectoral muscle in his left shoulder going for a rebound the previous night at Indiana. That ensures he will miss nearly all the remaining regular-season games and perhaps be out into the playoffs — if Atlanta makes it that far.

“That was very disappointing news,” Smith said. “I actually heard it on the radio on the way to the game. It’s real devastating.”

But the Hawks must carry on, and they’ll be relying heavily on Smith and Johnson. Both came through big time against the hapless Bobcats, who lost their fifth in a row and dropped to 2-9.

“We all understand that we have to step our games up in some respect,” Johnson said. “It was a great team effort, collectively, around the room.”

Byron Mullens led the Bobcats with 21 points in his first career start.

Bucks 102, Pistons 93

MILWAUKEE — Brandon Jennings scored 27 points and Stephen Jackson had 25 to help Milwaukee beat Detroit. The Bucks improved to 4-0 at home and 4-6 overall, while the Pistons dropped to 2-9 with their sixth straight loss and fifth in a row on the road. Detroit last lost six straight from March 13-April 3, 2010. Bucks coach Scott Skiles became the 39th coach in NBA history to reach 400 victories. He is 400-388. Greg Monroe led the Pistons with a career-high 32 points and had 16 rebounds.

Cavaliers 101, Suns 90

PHOENIX — Prize rookie Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 26 points and Antawn Jamison matched his season high with 23, helping Cleveland beat Phoenix. Steve Nash led six Suns players in double figures with 16 points, becoming the 15th active player to reach 16,000 points. He also had 15 assists.

That’s all the news for today.

Rose cues Bulls’ comeback over the Hawks

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO — With Derrick Rose having a big fourth quarter for the Chicago Bulls, everyone expected the reigning NBA MVP to take the final shot with the score tied. Instead, it was Luol Deng who got the game-winner in the closing seconds.

Deng’s layup with 3.7 seconds left lifted the Bulls to a 76-74 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Rose scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to rally the Bulls from a 19-point deficit. Coming out of a timeout, Deng cut along the baseline and took a feed from Joakim Noah to put Chicago ahead.

“At the end of practice, we always run (the play),” Deng said. “(Joakim) made a great pass. We had a feeling both of (the defenders) would go with Derrick.”

Turns out the play was designed for Rose after all.

“Obviously, we’re trying to get it to Derrick,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “They did a good job taking the first and second option away. Derrick set a great screen, (Noah) made a great pass and Luol made a great cut.”

The play caught the Hawks off guard as they were anticipating Rose to get the last shot.

“We all assumed that the ball was coming back to Rose,” Atlanta’s Al Horford said. “We were going to come and trap. That was a great play by their coach designed to take the pressure from Rose and hit Deng on the back. We didn’t expect that at all.”

Joe Johnson shot an airball at the buzzer, giving the Bulls the win.

Deng finished with 21 points for the Bulls and scored eight over the last four minutes after Atlanta re-established a lead.

“You can’t say enough about Luol,” Thibodeau said. “He does everything.”

Rose missed a runner with 21 seconds left, but Atlanta’s Jeff Teague missed two free throws. Rose then drove past Teague and scored over the Hawks’ Josh Smith with 9.9 seconds left to put the Bulls up 74-73.

Horford, who led the Hawks with 16 points, was fouled when Deng ran into him near the top of the key. Horford split two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining, tying the score and setting up Deng’s heroics.

“We stopped defending with the intensity that we did in the first three quarters,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “We didn’t make our free throws going down the stretch. If you don’t make your free throws on the road you can’t expect to win.”

Marvin Williams added 14 points and Josh Smith had 13 for Atlanta, which shot just 35 per cent from the floor but held Chicago to 34 per cent.

The Bulls have won four straight and their 5-1 start is their best since opening 12-0 in 1996-97.

Rose scored 11 points early in the fourth, including three three-pointers. His pullup three cut Atlanta’s lead to two with 8:15 to play and capped the Bulls’ 20-3 run.

“We were right there with them,” Horford said. “We dominated for most of the game. Just Derrick Rose happened.”

Two minutes later, Rose passed to Deng for a three in the corner, evening the score at 62 for the game’s first tie.

“I was saying something the whole game, cursing and everything,” Rose said when asked if he said anything between the third and fourth quarters to fire his team up. “We got things together at the right time.”

Johnson answered with a three of his own to spark a six-point Atlanta run. Chicago closed the gap to one on a series of free throws by Deng, setting up the stretch run.

The Bulls had won three straight coming in and were coming off a 40-point rout of Memphis on Sunday but didn’t lead until Rose’s spectacular crossover move and layup to put Chicago up 72-71 with 57.9 seconds to play.

The Hawks played in a back-to-back game for the third time in the first 10 days of the season and for the fourth time in five nights, all games in different cities, so perhaps it wasn’t surprising that they faltered down the stretch.

“It was disappointing the way we started the game,” Thibodeau said. “We played a low energy game. They played great and we caught a break (because) this was the second night for them in a back to back.”

Chicago shot 2 for 21 in the second period and went more than 8 minutes without a field goal during one stretch, missing 14 straight shots.

Atlanta led 38-26 at halftime as Chicago scored just three points more than its franchise record for fewest points in a half, set on April 10, 1999, against Miami.

After winning 62 games last season, the Bulls aren’t satisfied with ugly wins this time around.

“A win is a win and it’s hard to win in this league,” Rose said. “But we know we’re 10 times better than what we showed out there. I felt bad for our fans to see us play that bad.”

NOTES: Ronnie Brewer started in place of Richard Hamilton, who sat out his second straight game with a strained left groin. Hamilton was a game-time scratch from the starting lineup. . Chicago’s C.J. Watson missed the game with a strained left elbow suffered on Sunday. Watson is listed as day-to-day by the team but was seen before the game with his arm in a sling. . Atlanta handed Miami its first loss on Monday and was trying to knock off one of last season’s Eastern Conference finalists for the second straight night. . After a day off on Wednesday, the Hawks open a stretch of three games in three nights at home, starting with a matchup against Miami on Thursday. The last game of the stretch is against the Bulls.

Hawks Hand Miami Heat First Loss of the Season:…

The Miami Heat suffered their first loss of the 2011/12 NBA season, losing 100-92 against the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 2.

The Heat came out strong against the Hawks, taking a three point lead into halftime. Both teams remained competitive for the rest of the contest, but the Heat had no answers for the Hawks in the final moments of the game. Tracy McGrady had a solid fourth quarter for the Hawks, knocking down several big threes, and sealing Miami’s fate.

“He played exceptionally well,” LeBron James said after the game. “When you’re born a scorer, you’re always a scorer. No matter what may happen to athleticism or anything like that, he’s a natural born scorer and we saw that tonight.”

Atlanta’s zone defense certainly bothered Miami, and that seems to be the Heat’s biggest weakness so far.

“We need to work through it,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters after the game. “Look, we’re going to see enough of it that we will have our breakthrough. We hope to have it sooner than later, but you can see, our minds were heavy from that point on and our minds were occupied rather than playing free.”

Once again, LeBron led Miami’s offense, putting up 28 points (game high), 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Chris Bosh also had a decent outing for the Heat, walking away with 19 points and 6 rebounds of his own.

Dwyane Wade on the other hand struggled with his shot, but he still had an efficient game against Atlanta, finishing with 12 points, 10 assists and 3 steals.

Shane Battier had a good showing off the bench, converting on three of his four shots from long range. Battier finished with 12 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Udonis Haslem continued being a force to be reckoned with on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds (game high).

Miami will get a chance for some payback when they face the Hawks again on Jan. 5. Before that though, they’ll face the Indiana Pacers on Jan. 4, for the first time in the 2011/12 NBA season.

Johnson scores 21, Hawks end Heat’s streak

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MIAMI — Atlanta played zone defence. Tracy McGrady found his zone.

And with that, Miami’s unbeaten start came to an end.

Joe Johnson scored 21 points, McGrady hit a pair of big three-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Hawks recovered from early 10-point deficits to beat the Heat 100-92 on Monday night.

McGrady and Al Horford each scored 16 for the Hawks (4-1), who opened the final period on a 15-3 run to take control. And McGrady made perhaps the two biggest plays of the night in the final minutes, first throwing a lob to Josh Smith for a dunk, then hitting a three-pointer that gave the Hawks a 93-84 lead with 2:26 left.

“Been a long time since I had that feeling,” McGrady said. “It feels good. It feels right.”

LeBron James scored 28 points, Chris Bosh scored 19 and Dwyane Wade finished with 12 points and 10 assists for Miami (5-1). The Heat were outscored 33-21 in the fourth quarter and struggled against Atlanta’s zone defence, which not only slowed Miami down but disrupted its rhythm for long stretches. Montreal’s Joel Anthony had two points and six rebounds at centre for the Heat.

Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said not only was the zone effective on the court, it got into the Heat’s heads as well.

“We need to work through it,” Spoelstra said. “Look, we’re going to see enough of it that we will have our breakthrough. We hope to have it sooner than later. … But you can see, our minds were heavy from that point on and our minds were occupied rather than playing free.”

Jeff Teague finished with 15 points for Atlanta.

McGrady and Jannero Pargo made three-pointers midway through the fourth, giving Atlanta what was then its biggest lead at 82-74. Miami twice cut the lead to four, the second of those coming when Udonis Haslem made a free throw with 3:24 remaining.

The Heat got no closer. Off a set play called during a time-out, McGrady’s lob to Smith gave Atlanta some breathing room, and then the Florida native connected from beyond the arc on the left wing to essentially seal the win for the Hawks.

McGrady scored 13 in the fourth, his biggest final quarter since November 2008.

“He played exceptionally well,” James said of McGrady. “When you’re born a scorer, you’re always a scorer. No matter what may happen to athleticism or anything like that, he’s a natural born scorer and we saw that tonight.”

As has been the case regularly this season, Miami came out flying.

A right-handed dunk from the left-handed Bosh — he went by three Hawks on the play, sprawling to the court on the landing — less than a minute into the contest got the Heat started. Wade threw a long alley-oop pass to James for another slam and a 20-10 lead.

And when the six-foot-10 Atlanta forward Vladimir Radmanovic tried to dunk on the 6-4 Wade in the second quarter, not only did he get rejected at the rim he got a stare-down as well.

More often than not so far in this young season, once the Heat get the highlight machine going — as they did against Dallas in the season opener and Charlotte on Sunday night — they’ve simply run away from opponents.

Not in this game. Atlanta had plenty of answers.

“The zone changed the rhythm of the game,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said.

Down by 10 midway through the second quarter, Atlanta made a run to turn everything around. A 17-5 run not only erased the deficit, but gave the Hawks their first lead at 44-42 when Horford scored off a lob from Smith.

Miami scored the next eight points, then got unlucky on the final play of the half. Wade swatted a ball away from the baseline, but it sailed directly to a wide-open Johnson, who swished a 3-pointer as the half expired to cut Miami’s edge to 50-47 at the break.

Johnson was 4 for 4 in the second quarter, and the Hawks’ starters shot a combined 11 for 14 in the second 12 minutes.

Neither team led by more than four points in the third, and that was the cushion — 71-67 — that Miami carried into the fourth. Atlanta led by three after another jumper by Johnson with 4:39 left, but the Hawks missed seven of their final eight shots of the quarter, six of those from the perimeter. And when Shane Battier made a 3-pointer, just his third field goal of the season, with 26 seconds left in the period, the Heat were back on top.

Then Atlanta simply took off in the fourth, denying Miami any shot at the first 6-0 start in franchise history. And when McGrady threw that lob to Smith, he pointed to the Hawks’ bench in celebration, sensing the win was coming.

“Great execution,” McGrady said. “That’s what you have to do when you’re playing great teams.”

NOTES: Actor Adrien Brody and rapper Lil Wayne sat next to each other courtside. … The teams play again Thursday in Atlanta, a game that will mark Miami’s fourth in five nights. … Wade had eight assists by halftime, already tying a season high. … Monday’s game marked just the third time McGrady played at Miami since November 2008. … The Heat were without reserve rookie C Mickell Gladness (left foot infection). He is day-to-day. … Hawks vice-president Dominique Wilkins said G Kirk Hinrich (shoulder surgery) is still expected to miss another month.

Report: Pistons’ Tracy McGrady agrees to one-year…

Tracy McGrady, who played for the Detroit Pistons last season, has agreed to a 1-year, veteran-minimum deal with the Atlanta Hawks, a source close to the situation told

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

McGrady, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard, averaged 8.0 points and 23.4 minutes per game for the Pistons, appearing in 72 games and starting 39.

McGrady, now a 15-year-veteran, has been hampered by injuries over the past few seasons.

But he told the Free Press last week. “I am back, I have my athleticism, my knee is a lot stronger, my body is in shape. I have no restrictions. Everything will fall into place.”

McGrady is three years removed from microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Before his health issues, McGrady, 32, was a star with spectacular dunks as a normal part of his game. He showed flashes of that form last season, bringing occasional stability to the lineup.

That’s all for today.
