Orlando Magic crushed by rival Atlanta Hawks on…

Even when most of their roster was healthy, the Orlando Magic struggled recently against the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks had won nine of the teams’ previous 11 regular-season and postseason games entering their matchup Friday night — and Dwight Howard had played in all of those games.

Things turned ugly without Howard on Friday.

In what could be a preview of the remainder of Orlando’s season now that Howard has been diagnosed with a herniated disk in his lower back, the Hawks dominated the Magic 109-81 at Amway Center.

Nothing worked for Orlando. Not the offense. And especially not the defense, which allowed the Hawks to make 75 percent of their shots in the first quarter and just over 50 percent of their shots for the entire game.

“It was a very, very poor defensive effort,” coach Stan Van Gundy said.

“I just told ‘em after the game, ‘Run back.’ I was really, really upset, especially with our starters in the first quarter. [They] just did not bring anything to that game in what we needed, and I told them that. We didn’t run back. We didn’t get matched up. They got too many easy shots. There was no excuse for what happened in that first quarter.”

Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams finished with 16 points apiece. Reserve point guard Jannero Pargo scored a game-high 17 points.

“We just didn’t do anything right tonight,” Magic wing Jason Richardson said. “No excuses.”

Glen Davis, who replaced Howard in the Magic lineup, scored 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added nine rebounds.

The Magic (34-25) need to find some traction — and quickly.

They lead the seventh-place New York Knicks and the eighth-place Philadelphia 76ers by three games and hold a 5½-game lead over the ninth-place Milwaukee Bucks.

The Magic showed decent effort at times against the Hawks (35-24).

On one sequence in the first quarter, Davis delivered a bone-crunching screen to Smith that sent the 6-foot-9, 225-pound Smith to Amway Center’s parquet floor.

A few seconds later, Richardson sprinted down the court to block Zaza Pachulia’s layup attempt on a fastbreak. Richardson grabbed the ball, passed it ahead to Von Wafer, who sent it to Davis for a fastbreak layup. The score cut Atlanta’s lead to 25-20.

But the Hawks would finish the first period 15 for 20 from the field.

“We didn’t let up because Dwight wasn’t playing,” Smith said.

Atlanta’s shooters cooled off in the second quarter, shooting just 37 percent, but the Hawks maintained their momentum because the Magic shot only 32 percent from the field.

It was a rotten first half.

Quentin Richardson’s face absorbed what appeared to be an accidental left forearm from Pachulia as they both went for a loose ball with 4:53 remaining in the half. Richardson looked dazed, left the court with athletic trainer Keon Weise and did not return to the game.

Late in the half, Van Gundy received his first technical foul of the season. With Orlando trailing 61-42, a referee whistled Wafer for a questionable offensive foul after Wafer simply appeared to take a baseline jumper.

Van Gundy complained, and those gripes generated the technical.

The Hawks finished the half with 62 points — the highest point total for a Magic opponent in a first half this season and just one point shy of the highest point total by a Magic opponent in any half this season.

“They give us problems with or without Dwight,” Jason Richardson said.

True.

But without Howard, those problems were even more severe.

Hawks Avenge Blowout Loss to New Orleans Hornets:…

New Orleans Hornets

After countless close losses in January, the New Orleans Hornets finally broke out in a big way with a 26-point win over the Orlando Magic Friday night. After a day off, the Hornets looked to make it two in a row against the Atlanta Hawks Sunday evening in New Orleans. It was not meant to be as the Hawks flew past the Hornets 94-72.

New Orleans Hornets vs. Atlanta Hawks

As a native of New Orleans, the rivalry between my hometown and the fine folks of Atlanta has led to tears of both joy and sadness. Needless to say, there have been numerous memorable games between the Saints and Falcons over the years. However, the 100-59 pasting that the Hornets put on the Hawks last year holds a special place in my heart.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who remembers that game. The Hawks started out on Sunday night like they wanted to beat the Hornets 100-59 themselves. To be successful, New Orleans has to play great defense. The Hornets are not talented enough to get into a shootout with athletic teams like the Hawks and come out on top.

The Hawks did not miss a shot until well into the first quarter. In fact, the Hornets trailed at one point 27-6. Jeff Teague was particularly deadly for the Hawks. And former Hornet Willie Green was hot as well. In the second period, the Hornets got back to playing defense. But points were still hard to come by as New Orleans trailed 46-35 at halftime.

A 20-2 Hawks scoring run in the third period put the Hornets away. The biggest problem all season for New Orleans continued against the Hawks. The Hornets were anemic once again from three-point land while the Hawks shot over 50% from behind the arc all night. It wasn’t quite 100-59 but the Hawks blew out New Orleans 94-72.

Looking ahead

Things don’t figure to get any easier for the Hornets on Monday. After falling to the Hawks, New Orleans will travel to Miami to face the Heat. Last year, the Hornets got off to a hot start and one of their early season wins came against the Heat. If this New Orleans team can also beat the Heat, it will be the biggest story in the NBA Monday night.

Patrick Michael was born in New Orleans and currently resides in the Big Easy. A loyal New Orleans NBA fan, Patrick was a diehard New Orleans Jazz fan and now cheers for the Hornets. Patrick was in the New Orleans Arena the night the Hornets were one win away from the Western Conference Finals.

Report: Atlanta Hawks Offered Joe Johnson and Josh…

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 3:00 pm  |  4 responses

According to ESPN, the Orlando Magic aren’t interested in acquiring young talent (and a combination of valuable draft picks) should they trade Dwight Howard. Nope, they want established vets instead, which the Atlanta Hawks offered them (but they were turned down): “Orlando has moved into a new arena last season and has a 85-year-old owner in Rich De Vos. Sources say De Vos has little interest in starting over/rebuilding, as evidenced by the recent decisions to trade for Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis and re-sign Jason Richardson even though Howard’s future is so murky. The trade proposal for Howard that advanced the farthest to date — before Magic GM Otis Smith publicly announced that he’s not ready to part with his 26-year-old star — would have delivered Nets center Brook Lopez, Portland Trail Blazers swingman Gerald Wallace and at least one first-round pick to Orlando while also seeing the Nets absorb the long-term contracts of Hedo Turkoglu and Chris Duhon for the right to take Dwight with them to Brooklyn. Sources told ESPN.com that the aforementioned Hawks, meanwhile, engaged Orlando in trade talks for Howard earlier this month with an offer believed to be headlined by $124 million guard Joe Johnson and swingman Josh Smith. You have to figure that the Magic, though, would insist on Al Horford if such discussions ever got serious. The Hawks are not on Howard’s short list of preferred trade destinations alongside the Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, even though Atlanta is his hometown.”

Hawks sign veteran Tracy McGrady to 1-year deal

ATLANTA (AP)—The Atlanta Hawks have signed two-time NBA scoring champion
Tracy McGrady to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.

McGrady is with the Hawks for the team’s first practice on Friday, wearing
No. 1. His contract is believed to be for the veteran minimum.

The 6-foot-8 McGrady is expected to provide depth at shooting guard and
small forward. His signing has added to speculation the team will not be able to
re-sign high-scoring sixth man Jamal Crawford.

The 32-year-old McGrady, a seven-time All-Star, has been slowed by various
physical problems in recent years. He averaged 8.0 points last season for the
Detroit Pistons, his third team in the past two years.

He won back-to-back scoring titles with the Orlando Magic, including his
career-best average of 32.1 points in 2002-03.

Promising festivities akin to “a Magic All-Star weekend,” Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard said over Twitter on Saturday that he’s putting together events for Nov. 11-13 that will include an exhibition game that Sunday at UCF.

“Orlando is gonna love what’s about to happen,” Howard wrote.

A couple of days ago, Howard floated over Twitter the idea of an “old-school vs. new-school exhibition game/weekend” in Orlando, and it appears that he’s following through on his plans.

Howard’s manager didn’t immediately return an e-mail message from the Orlando Sentinel.

But Howard is offering some details. He mentioned on Twitter that the game will be held on Nov. 13, which is a Sunday.

With the NBA lockout continuing, with no end in sight, Howard’s exhibition game might be the only pro basketball — even if it’s just an exhibition — Orlandoans see up-close for a while.

Howard has asked fans for their ideas, and he told his Twitter followers that he’ll have more details “soon.”

The Atlanta Hawks have been handed a document listing their 2011-12 NBA schedule. Nobody really knows what to do with it.

Follow , and

Like SB Nation Atlanta on Facebook.

Jul 19, 2011 – The hypothetical 2011-12 Atlanta Hawks schedule is now out. Go look at it! It’s like you can actually SEE professional basketball games being played.

The good guys begin their defense of the No. 5 Eastern Conference playoff spot with an inspiring home stand against … well, they’re tipping off the season on the road against the Minnesota Timberwolves, which might literally be the lowest honor any team in the NBA could be granted. Home opener: Nov. 4 against the Boston Celtics.

First game against the Chicago Bulls, who knocked Atlanta out of the playoffs, comes right after that. Mid-November sees a run of the presumably Dwight Howard-less Orlando Magic and back-to-back games against the conference champ Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.

The team’s first game against former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets guard Iman Shumpert’s New York Knicks comes right after that Bulls game, while Atlanta’s first game against the Los Angeles Georgia Bulldogs: Feb. 11 at the Highlight Factory.

No, the Hawks aren’t playing on Christmas this year. Nobody is.
