New York Knicks Vs. Atlanta Hawks March 30 Game…

The New York Knicks take on the Atlanta Hawks in an important Friday night (March 30) game. The team is on a nice three game winning streak, showing guts and grit that I had worried would go away with all the injuries.

Thus far, the Knicks have overcome the loss of Bill Walker, a new injury to Jared Jeffries, Amare Stoudemire dealing with new back issues and Jeremy Lin going through leg problems. The team hasn’t folded though, beating the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks and Orlando Magic over the past week. I think the win over Orlando in itself proves that Carmelo Anthony can really lead this team if he stays committed to the mission.

Now the Knicks have to take on a tough Hawks team that is actually suffering its own problems. The Hawks lost center Al Horford for the season and have limped through the season ever since that loss. The up-and-down progression for the team includes two straight losses this week to the Bucks and Chicago Bulls. It gives them extra incentive to play New York hard on Friday night, which could make this a very competitive contest.

The Knicks and Hawks last played on February 22, when New York ran away with a nice 99-82 win. I thought the team put forward a very balanced attack, with eight different players scoring at least 7 points each and that it is exactly what the Knicks need against the Hawks. Stoudemire only went for 7 points in that game, so if the roster can find that scoring from someone else, I think that the Knicks actually stand a really good shot at running the winning streak to four games.

It is questionable whether Lin is going to play against the Hawks, but hopefully he is ready to take the court again. It may come all the way down to game time for him to make that final decision, but the Knicks could certainly use him as an additional weapon on offense. I think that if Lin plays, the Knicks will easily win this game with the depth that the bench possesses right now. Without him it might become a struggle, but one that Steve Novak and J.R. Smith could use to their advantage.

At 26-25 on the season, the Knicks are now just two and a half games behind the Philadelphia 76ers for first place in the Atlantic division. Catching up to the 76ers would certainly prove sweet, especially because it would make the Knicks one of the top four seeds in the 2012 Eastern Conference Playoffs. I think that would give the team a very favorable chance to make at least the second round. Hopefully the Knicks play as well against the Hawks as they did against the Magic and that the team continues to show that it’s got the talent to compete with the best this postseason.

Bucks-Hawks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks’ recent lack of offensive punch has contributed to their
current slump, though they seemingly have a solid chance to snap out of their
funk against a Milwaukee Bucks team that’s struggled to defend lately.

Short-handed Atlanta seeks its 11th win in 13 home meetings with Milwaukee
on Friday night, though the Hawks will be without leading scorer Joe Johnson
again.

Johnson did little to help end the Hawks’ offensive struggles Wednesday, as
the club shot a season-worst 33.7 percent in an 85-82 loss to Golden State.

Johnson, who missed the previous two games with tendinitis in his left knee,
finished with a team-high 18 points but went 6 of 17 from the field. He’ll sit
out at least two more contests as his knee is stiff after playing more than 37
minutes against the Warriors.

Atlanta will also be without backup shooting guard Willie Green for at least
two games after he left Wednesday’s contest with lower back spasms, and top
reserve Mike Dunleavy has returned to Milwaukee to be with his wife, who is
having a baby.

Atlanta (20-15) has lost six of eight, shooting 39.2 percent and averaging
83.6 points. The Hawks have shot below 40 percent in three straight games, and
they haven’t failed to reach the mark in four in a row
since Dec. 23-31, 2006.

“I thought we missed a lot of point-blank shots with nobody around,”
Johnson said.

Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia recorded double-doubles, but
their rebound totals were aided by many of their own misses. The trio shot 15
for 49.

“I thought we settled for way too many jump shots,” coach Larry Drew said.
“We’ve got to be smarter and understand the flow of the game. It’s one thing if
you’re making shots, but if you’re not making shots from the perimeter you can’t
just settle for jump shots.”

The Hawks made 45.8 percent of their field-goal attempts in a 97-92 win in
Milwaukee on Jan. 23, as Johnson scored a game-high 26 points and Smith added 19
points and 13 rebounds.

It was their fifth win in seven meetings, including playoffs, over the
Bucks. Milwaukee has lost seven of nine after falling 102-96 at Boston on
Wednesday.

Ersan Ilyasova had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Drew Gooden added 23
points, but Brandon Jennings shot 2 for 11 and finished with six points.

Milwaukee (14-21) has allowed three straight opponents to reach the
100-point mark for the first time all season. It hasn’t allowed four consecutive
teams to hit triple digits since Nov. 26-Dec. 1, 2010.

Despite those struggles, only two of the Bucks’ last seven losses have come
by double digits.

“We have to get it done,” Gooden said. “You know, it’s funny. We never get
blown out. We fight to the end, and it just kind of (upsets) us that we come up
short every time, almost.”

Jennings had 19 points and 12 assists in the first meeting with the Hawks,
though he had four points and shot 1 for 8 in a 110-85 loss March 15 in the most
recent matchup in Atlanta. Johnson scored 36 points in that contest.

Jennings has shot 31.0 percent while averaging 8.7 points in three career
regular-season games at Philips Arena.

Hawks-Bucks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks have been struggling on the road. A favorable schedule on
their upcoming trip could help them improve their record away from Philips
Arena, but their first opponent is suddenly surging.

The Hawks open a five-game road trip Monday night when they visit a
Milwaukee Bucks team coming off an impressive upset.

Atlanta (12-5) is off to a solid start, sitting percentage points behind
Orlando for Southeast Division lead despite a 4-4 road record. Three of those
victories have come against teams with losing records.

The Hawks will try to add some wins to that total during a five-game,
nine-day road trip in which four of the games will be against opponents
currently under .500.

The first of those opponents is Milwaukee (6-9), which played much better
than its record in road upsets of New York and Miami over the weekend.

The Bucks, who were previously 0-8 away from home, defeated the Heat 91-82
on Sunday despite shooting 35.0 percent.

“Huge,” guard Shaun Livingston said. “Especially for us being winless on
the road and going 2-0 against two good teams, especially the quality team like
the Heat, it’s huge for your confidence.”

The Bucks forced 47 turnovers on the trip while limiting Miami and the
Knicks to 37.1 percent shooting from the field.

“Our defense was very, very good again,” coach Scott Skiles said after
Sunday’s win. “When we needed a couple big plays, we were able to make them.”

Atlanta has been making opposing defenses look good on the road. The Hawks
have averaged 80.0 points while losing their last two games away from Philips
Arena, including a 90-76 defeat to Philadelphia on Friday in which coach Larry
Drew said the team “quit” in the second half.

Drew had little to complain about at home in a 121-94 victory over Cleveland
on Saturday. The Hawks shot 55.4 percent and went 11 of 24 from 3-point range as
Joe Johnson scored 25 points to lead six players in double figures.

“I thought from start to finish we were in an attack mode,” Drew said. “You
could see the aggression. You could see the energy.”

Johnson, though, is averaging 14.5 points per game on the road – nearly
eight fewer than he’s averaging at home.

Milwaukee’s Stephen Jackson, benched for Friday’s game after missing that
day’s shootaround, came off the bench against the Heat and finished with 10
points in 26 minutes.

“The biggest thing is I hate not being out there and (Sunday) I was able to
help my team,” Jackson said.

Livingston replaced Jackson in the starting lineup on the trip and made a
case he may belong there. Livingston had 10 points and five assists in Sunday’s
win after recording 18 points and shooting 7 of 10 against the Knicks.

Atlanta and Milwaukee split their four meetings last season, with each team
winning once on the road.

Unfortunately the work stoppage may continue after the two-week period expires as no new developments have been reported and the two sides are currently far apart on most (if not all) of the major sticking points.

The NBA and the Player’s Association are expected to meet at some point next week, which leaves them little time to save the remainder of the season if by some miracle the wrinkles are ironed out in time to play ball.

Hawks fans have a hard time

ATLANTA — Pulling for the Atlanta Hawks is about as tough as having teeth pulled, according to a new analysis.

Atlanta’s NBA team is ranked fourth-most difficult NBA squad to get behind by On Numbers, a sister publication of Atlanta Business Chronicle. It’s only more difficult supporting the Sacramento Kings Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers.

The easiest NBA team to root for is the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers have reached the NBA’s championship series five teams in the past decade, winning three titles.

On Tuesday, On Numbers ranked the Atlanta Falcons 15th out of 32 NFL teams for fan difficulty.
