Pistons-Hawks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks bounced back from a disappointing home defeat their last time out, clinching their fifth consecutive postseason berth in the process.

They haven’t lost to the Detroit Pistons on their own court in more than four years.

The playoff-bound Hawks open a season-ending five-game homestand Wednesday night seeking an eighth straight home win over the Pistons, who are coming off arguably their most dominating display of the season.

One night after losing 102-86 to lowly Toronto, Atlanta (36-25) cruised to a 109-87 road win Monday in the back end of a home-and-home set. Rookie Ivan Johnson posted a season-high 21 points while Joe Johnson scored 18 for the Hawks, who recorded 28 fast break points.

“We was better than what we played (Sunday) night, we just stepped it up more. It happens, it’s the NBA where amazing happens,” Ivan Johnson told the league’s official website.

After concluding its road schedule 17-16 – the first time it has finished over .500 on the road since the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, Atlanta closes the regular-season with five in a row at home. The Hawks host Boston, New York, the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas following this contest.

“Hopefully we can get all five of those,” said Jeff Teague, who had 19 points and 10 assists Monday for his third double-double. “That would be big.”

The Hawks are tied with Orlando for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference but own the tiebreaker over the Magic.

“We’re right there in the thick of things,” coach Larry Drew said. “As long as there’s an opportunity for us to move up, we want to try to take advantage of that.”

A home matchup with Detroit (23-38) could help Atlanta do just that. Since falling 94-90 on Feb. 12, 2008, the Hawks have limited the Pistons to an average of 88.9 points during their seven-game home winning streak in the series.

Atlanta has taken two of three from Detroit this season, with its only loss coming 86-85 on the road March 9. The Hawks won the most recent matchup 101-96 on April 6 behind Teague’s career best-tying 24 points and season-high 11 assists.

Atlanta is 7-0 when Teague dishes out at least nine assists.

The Pistons looked like anything but one of the weaker teams in the league during a 116-77 dismantling of Cleveland on Tuesday night. Detroit shot 60.0 percent from the floor – its highest mark in more than two years – and took a whopping 100-50 lead into the fourth quarter en route to only their second win in seven games.

“Sometimes, there are just crazy nights like that,” coach Lawrence Frank said. “Everything you shoot goes in. For them, everything they shoot doesn’t. We’ve all been there.”

Selected No. 8 overall in the draft, Brandon Knight scored a season-high 28 points on 11-of-12 shooting while Greg Monroe added 12 points and 13 boards for his 29th double-double.

“Even though the season is winding down, we wanted to set the tone for next year and the offseason and continue to build on that,” Knight said.

Detroit had dropped eight of 10 in opposing arenas before prevailing 109-85 at NBA-worst Charlotte on Thursday.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

NBA Basketball Detroit Pistons vs. Atlanta Hawks

DETROIT –

With the focus on trying to gain home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the Atlanta Hawks cannot afford a slip-up when they host the resurgent Detroit Pistons on Friday.

The Hawks are tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference but sit just 1 1/2 games behind third-place Indiana with a back-to-back coming up against two of the league’s worst road teams in Detroit and Charlotte. The Pistons have won three straight and five of six.

Detroit started its 5-1 stretch by beating Washington on March 26 and toppled the Wizards again Thursday night. Tayshaun Prince scored 14 points Thursday – his sixth straight double-digit game – and has averaged 19.0 points during that span. Guard Rodney Stuckey returned after missing three games with a hamstring injury and scored 15 points off the bench in less than 19 minutes.

The Pistons are looking to match their longest winning streak of the season (Feb. 3-10).

Atlanta broke out of a mini-slump by hammering league-worst Charlotte by 27 points Wednesday. Josh Smith continued his sensational play with 24 points and nine rebounds despite sitting out the fourth quarter. Smith is averaging 26 points in his last nine games.

The Hawks’ bench combined for 52 points, helped by the return of guard Jannero Pargo. After missing 10 games due to an appendectomy, Pargo returned to the rotation and scored 12 points in 15 minutes.

Atlanta is the only team in the league to beat Chicago, Miami and Oklahoma City this season.

Pistons F/C Ben Wallace surpassed 7,000 career defensive rebounds Wednesday, becoming the 21st player to reach that milestone.

The Hawks have beaten Detroit six straight times at home.

Pistons hold off Hawks 86-85

Tayshaun Prince made a driving left-handed shot with 24.3 seconds remaining, and the Detroit Pistons held on to beat the Atlanta Hawks 86-85 on Friday night.

Detroit wasted a 12-point fourth-quarter lead and trailed by one after Jeff Teague’s layup with 36.6 seconds to play, but Prince answered and Atlanta’s Joe Johnson missed a contested shot from the left corner in the final seconds.

Josh Smith came up with the rebound for the Hawks and sank a fadeaway that was immediately waived off for coming after the buzzer. The call was upheld after a video review.

Greg Monroe scored 20 points and Jason Maxiell added 19 for Detroit. Smith led the Hawks with 21 and Johnson scored 18 in his first game back after missing four with left knee tendinitis.

In late January, the Pistons blew a six-point lead with less than 40 seconds remaining against the Hawks and lost in overtime.

They nearly wasted a terrific defensive performance in the second half Friday, but Prince was able to connect on his shot from about 7 feet in the final minute.

The Hawks made their first nine shots of the game and led 50-41 at halftime after Teague blocked Monroe under the basket to end the second quarter.

The Detroit big man quickly returned the favor in the third, stuffing the 6-foot-2 Teague when the Atlanta guard tried to drive to the basket. The Pistons held Atlanta to 12 points and only two field goals in the quarter and took a 67-62 lead into the fourth.

It was 75-63 after a perimeter shot by Jonas Jerebko, but the Hawks chipped away. Atlanta cut the lead to two on a 3-pointer by Smith, but Maxiell jumped high to dunk home a miss by Prince with one hand, making it 84-80.

Maxiell went 9 of 11 from the field and added 12 rebounds. Monroe was 10 of 14.

With the Pistons clinging to an 84-83 lead, Prince missed. Monroe came up with the ball but quickly lost it, and Teague went the other way for a layup, forcing Detroit to score one more basket for the win.

Prince scored 17 points and Rodney Stuckey had 11 for the Pistons. Jerebko added 10.

Marvin Williams scored 16 points for Atlanta.

NOTES: Detroit’s Charlie Villanueva was active but did not play. He’s been out since Jan. 4 because of a right ankle problem. … Atlanta was playing the third game of a six-game road trip. … The Pistons shot 56 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 20 times.

Atlanta Hawks' Josh Smith wants to be traded,…

AUBURN HILLS – The Detroit
Pistons are working to make a trade, while their opponent tonight has
a player who reportedly wants to be traded.

Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks
would like to be dealt away from the team, according to a report in
the Atlanta Journal Constitution, citing an interview with an
individual close to Smith.

Asked by Hawks beat reporter
Michael Cunningham if he indeed wants to be traded, Smith replied
that he doesn’t pay any attention to trade rumors.

“I just go out there and play
the way I play and not worry about anything else,” Smith told the
newspaper. “I know this is a business. Whatever happens, happens
in the long run. But I know as long as I’m with the Hawks, I have
to put my best foot forward.”

The Pistons play the Hawks in a
7:30 p.m. game at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Smith enters the game in the midst
of his best scoring surge of the season for a Hawks team which has
played without Joe Johnson recently. Johnson returns and starts for
the Hawks tonight.

Smith has had four consecutive
20-point scoring games for the first time this year. He has averaged
26 points and 11.5 rebounds during that stretch.

Joe Johnson Injury Update: Atlanta Hawks Star A…

Read More: Joe Johnson (G – ATL), Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks

In the four games Johnson has missed so far, Atlanta is 3-1, with its most recent loss coming at the hands of the Miami Heat. Until the injury, Johnson was averaging 17.6 points a game for the Hawks, who hold a 23-16 record as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Friday’s game between the Hawks and Pistons is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.

Hawks ride late 3s to overtime win against Pistons

CBSSports.com wire reports

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Joe Johnson stole the ball near his own basket and brought it up the court a bit gingerly. Something was bothering him, although it wasn’t clear what until after the game.

“I jammed these two fingers on my left hand,” the Atlanta star said. “I couldn’t really get my feeling back. I thought we were going to call a timeout, but nobody called a timeout, so I just did what I could to try to get a shot off.”

Johnson’s 3-pointer over Rodney Stuckey with 1.9 seconds left sent the game to overtime, and the Hawks eventually pulled away from the Detroit Pistons for a 107-101 victory Friday night. Johnson scored 28 of his 30 points after halftime.

Detroit led 87-81 after Austin Daye’s baseline shot with 39.9 seconds left, but Marvin Williams cut the lead in half with a 3-pointer with 33.5 seconds to play. Johnson then stole a pass inside. His jammed fingers were on his non-shooting hand, and as the clock ran down, he kept the ball and made a tough 3-pointer to tie it.

The Hawks started the overtime with a 12-2 run, including 3-pointers by Williams and Josh Smith.

Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said he’d wanted his team to foul before Johnson’s tying shot.

“We kicked that game. We should have won the game, but we didn’t make winning plays down the stretch,” Frank said. “I think we were defeated as soon as that shot went in, and the game went to overtime. We have to be mentally tougher than that.”

Greg Monroe scored 22 points for the Pistons and Brandon Knight added 20.

Johnson was 1 of 9 from the field in the first half, but he recovered in a big way, surpassing 14,000 points for his career and continuing a strong stretch for him since the Hawks lost Al Horford earlier this month to a torn pectoral muscle.

The Hawks are 10-1 when Johnson scores at least 20 points.

“To me it’s just an unbelievable win,” Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. “It was a gutsy performance. We were literally dead in the water.”

Atlanta rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and tied it in the fourth quarter, but Jason Maxiell’s three-point play after an offensive rebound put the Pistons ahead 73-70 and started what looked like a decisive 8-0 run.

“We just wanted to kind of hang in there,” Drew said. “We hit a bad stretch in that fourth period, but I still felt that if we got some good looks, got some guys to knock a couple of 3s down, we’ll still be right there.”

The Pistons couldn’t hold on, starting a stretch of seven games in nine days on a sour note. Detroit had a chance to win it even after Johnson’s big 3-pointer in the final seconds of the fourth, but Knight’s last-second shot didn’t come close.

“It was frustrating when that shot went in, because we had controlled the whole game, but you have to forget about that and play the next five minutes,” Knight said. “You can’t give in just because the game went to OT.”

Maxiell led all scorers with 12 points in the first half. Detroit led 46-35 after Monroe’s three-point play with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter. Neither team was shooting all that well, but the Hawks turned the ball over 11 times in the half.

Detroit was playing without Tayshaun Prince (family matter) and Ben Gordon (sore shoulder).

Atlanta guard Jeff Teague left in the second half with a left ankle injury.

Williams finished with 22 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, and Smith had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Notes

  • Daye, who scored a career-high 28 points for the Pistons in a loss to Miami on Wednesday night, finished with 12 on Friday.
  • Johnson has 14,010 career points.

There is the quick update of the day.

Atlanta Hawks beat Pistons in OT

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) – Joe Johnson scored 28 of his 30 points after halftime, including a tying 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in regulation, and the Atlanta Hawks stunned the Detroit Pistons 107-101 in overtime Friday night.

Atlanta forced overtime with a pair of late 3-pointers. Marvin Williams made one with 33.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to three, then Johnson stole a pass inside and brought the ball up the court. Johnson looked like as if might have hurt himself, but he kept the ball and sank a tough 3-pointer over Rodney Stuckey to tie it.

The Hawks started the extra session with a 12-2 run, including 3-pointers by Williams and Josh Smith.

The Hawks are now 10-1 when Johnson scores at least 20 points.

Atlanta rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to tie it in the fourth quarter, but Jason Maxiell’s three-point play after an offensive rebound put the Pistons ahead 73-70 and started what looked like a decisive 8-0 run.

But the Pistons couldn’t hold on, starting a stretch of seven games in nine days on a sour note. Detroit had a chance to win it even after Johnson’s big 3-pointer in the final seconds of the fourth, but Knight’s last-second shot didn’t come close.

Maxiell led all scorers with 12 points in the first half. Detroit led 46-35 after Monroe’s three-point play with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter. Neither team was shooting all that well, but the Hawks turned the ball over 11 times in the half.

Detroit was playing without Tayshaun Prince (family reason) and Ben Gordon (sore shoulder).

Atlanta guard Jeff Teague left in the second half with a left ankle injury.

Williams finished with 22 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, and Smith had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

That’s all for today.

Detroit Pistons falter late, lose 107-101 to…

AUBURN HILLS — The foul the Detroit Pistons could have given in the final seconds of the fourth quarter went unwhistled Friday night, and whether through miscommunication or inability to jump out on Joe Johnson’s long bomb to force overtime, it cost them a game.

Johnson’s 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime, and the Atlanta Hawks cruised from there in a 107-101 victory at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Pistons had a foul to give after the Hawks’ final fourth-quarter possession began with 12.9 seconds left but never used it.

“We had a foul to give,” Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. “Obviously, we wanted to foul. We didn’t foul. But look, we kicked the game, no doubt about it. It’s a game we obviously should’ve won. We didn’t.

“It’s very, very disappointing. It’s yet another good performance that gets wasted, not in the win column.”

Pistons guard Brandon Knight said the foul to give was discussed earlier, during a timeout with 33.5 seconds left.

“I know we talked about it a little bit, but I think we just decided to play it straight up, and he ended up hitting a good shot,” Knight said.

From the time the Pistons took an 8-7 lead until Johnson’s bomb, the Hawks never led and tied the game only twice.

But Rodney Stuckey’s turnover led to Johnson’s 3-pointer in his face moments later, tying the game 87-87 at the end of regulation. A wild shot by Knight on the Pistons’ final possession of regulation was off.

“You have an All-Star like Joe Johnson, that happens,” Pistons forward Jason Maxiell said.

HAWKS 107, PISTONS 101

Records: Pistons 4-16, Hawks 14-6

Big shot: Center Greg Monroe overcame a slow start that saw him go 0-for-5 from the field during a scoreless first quarter to finish with 22 points and 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive end of the floor. After the opening period, he shot 10-for-15 from the floor.

Super sub: Forward Jason Maxiell entered the game averaging 4.1 points but gave the Pistons a huge lift by coming off the bench to score a season-high 19 points, 12 of them in the second quarter. He also grabbed four of his eight rebounds on the offensive end to share game-high honors in that department with Monroe.

Century mark: For the first time all season, the Pistons scored 100 points. Credit rookie point guard Brandon Knight with getting them there as he hit a trio of 3-pointers during a 33.3-second flurry in OT, the final one making it 107-101 with 23.1 seconds left. Knight also had a career-high eight assists.

Injury update: Ben Gordon (shoulder) missed his fourth game while Will Bynum (foot) sat for the sixth time. Charlie Villanueva (ankle) has been out indefinitely. The Pistons also played without Tayshaun Prince, who missed his second straight game while tending to an unspecified family matter.

Frank-ly speaking: “We kicked the game, there was no doubt about it. It’s a game we obviously should have won. We didn’t. It’s very, very disappointing. It’s yet another good performance that gets wasted, not in the win column. We put ourselves in position, up six with 39.8 to go (in regulation), and we lost the game.”

Next up: 7 p.m. Saturday at Philadelphia 76ers (Fox Sports Detroit)

Overtime started with a Zaza Pachulia dunk for the Hawks and a Maxiell missed layup — a mini-epidemic for the Pistons — and it only got worse for Detroit.

Pachulia had another dunk in overtime, followed by 3-pointers from Marvin Williams and Josh Smith, as the Hawks blew open a 99-89 lead.

Frank said the Pistons “were defeated once the game went into overtime” on Johnson’s shot.

“As a team,” Knight said, “I think it was a little bit demoralizing when he hit that shot. But that’s something that we can’t be doing in the future. We’ve got to keep plugging.”

With 39.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Pistons looked like they might be headed for victory when Austin Daye’s jumper gave them an 85-79 lead. But for the second consecutive game against a quality opponent, the Pistons couldn’t protect a late lead, just as happened in Wednesday’s loss to the Miami Heat.

Williams responded to Daye’s jumper with a 27-foot 3-pointer with 33.5 seconds left, the play that seemed to rankle Frank more than any.

“We hit the bucket with 39 seconds to go; they’re walking the ball up the court,” Frank said, emphasizing the last few words disdainfully, “and we don’t get matched up, and we give Marvin Williams the 3.”

The loss in the first game of a five-game, six-day stretch spoiled big efforts by Maxiell, who had 19 points and eight rebounds — including 12 in the second quarter, when he surpassed his previous season-high of 11 points — and Greg Monroe, who overcame some early struggles to finish around the basket to finish with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons. Knight had 20 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

The Pistons jumped to a 46-35 halftime lead by scoring 15 points off of 13 Atlanta turnovers, which is what the Hawks averaged for a game entering Saturday, second-fewest in the NBA. The Hawks finished with 19 turnovers.

The Hawks rallied, largely behind Johnson, who had 28 of his 30 points after halftime. But after Atlanta drew even at 70-70, the Pistons scored eight consecutive points and had the game in their hands with less than 8 minutes left.

“The moment of truth, the last 6 minutes of the game, that’s when we have to make winning plays,” Frank said, “and we left them out there again.”

Detroit Pistons host Atlanta Hawks

Pistons

DETROIT –

The Atlanta hawks visit the Detroit Pistons Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Hawks (13-6) just lost by 22 points on Wednesday in San Antonio. The Pistons (4-15) dropped a close one Wednesday night to the Miami Heat, 101-98.

It was one of the better offensive showings for the Pistons who are the only NBA team not to score 100 points in a game this season.

Turnovers proved to be the difference Wednesday as LeBron James made his final six free throws to push the Heat past the Pistons.

This is the first of four meetings this season between Detroit and Atlanta.

With the absence of Ben Gordon, Austin Daye has stepped up for Detroit. Daye scored a career-best 28 points against the Heat.

Gordon has missed the past three games with a shoulder injury.

Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.

Chicago Bulls Stage Fourth Quarter Comeback, Beat…

After looking like they were in recovery mode from New Year’s celebrations, the Chicago Bulls pulled a fourth quarter miracle and beat the Atlanta Hawks, 76-74 on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Bulls climbed back from a 19-point deficit and extended their win streak to four.

Derrick Rose was the miracle worker, scoring 21 of the fourth quarter’s points. He continues to be a man on a mission and if he plays this way through the season, he could see his second MVP award.

It wasn’t a pretty win for the Bulls as they played very sluggishly and struggled with shots in the first three quarters.

The Hawks jumped on the board first and quickly took a 10-point lead. The United Center was quiet and it felt like Bulls were on the floor for practice. Some of the Bench Mob jumped in but it didn’t matter.

Atlanta finished the quarter leading 23-15.

The second quarter wasn’t much better. Atlanta grabbed its largest lead in the game to 12 points and entered halftime with a 38-26 advantage.

Expecting halftime adjustments, nothing happened in the third quarter. I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to happen at all in this game. The Bulls were cold in their shooting and watched Atlanta extend their lead.

The Hawks entered the fourth quarter 56-42. Rose woke up, hitting shots and slowly the Bulls cut down Atlanta’s lead. The Hawks were now the cold ones. Just like a runner slowly coming up behind the leader, the Bulls finally tied the game at 62, at the 6:20 mark.

With less than a minute remaining, the Bulls took their first lead of the game, 72-71 and their second one came with nine seconds remaining, 74-73.

From the Hawks’ poor free throw shooting, the Bulls got the win from a Luol Deng three-pointer.

Scoring…Rose was the leading scorer with 30 points and seven assists. Deng added 21 points with eight coming in the last four minutes.

Rip Hamilton and C.J. Watson both missed the game from injuries.

Next up? The Bulls play the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

As a lifelong Bulls fan and Chicago resident, it’s been a good era under Derrick Rose.

Fan Perspective: Atlanta Hawks’ Jerry Stackhouse…

As an Atlanta Hawks fan, I believe my hometown team is close to making that breakthrough of getting past the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Additionally, it appears head coach Larry Drew is looking to fill spots on the roster and building depth at the small forward position.

Marvin Williams started the 2010-11 season as the starting small forward, but injuries and inconsistent play has opened the door for someone else to take his place.

Tracy McGrady’s signing is one response and another response is Jerry Stackhouse who can provide experience and depth coming off the bench.

I don’t know Marvin Williams’ future, but he could be a candidate for amnesty and if that is the case, the void at small forward has to be filled.

Josh Smith has been interchangeable between the small and power forward positions and had recently lost 30 pounds, but his future is up in the air as well with trade rumors still persisting.

Jerry Stackhouse, a two-time All-Star, is the latest player to be signed and Hawks fans are generally optimistic and hope Stackhouse has something left to give the Hawks in this lockout shortened season.

Stackhouse did turn 37 this year and even though he isn’t the same player from ten years ago that had a 29.3 per game scoring average with the Detroit Pistons, he is a capable defender and is a decent mid-range shooter, especially if left open.

Stackhouse has played in over 900 regular season games and participated in 78 playoff games.

Stackhouse was on that 2006 Dallas Mavericks’ team that came very close to a NBA title against the Miami Heat which featured Dirk Nowitiski and Jason Terry.

During the 2006-2007 season, Stackhouse had shot a career-high from behind three-point line during the regular season and averaged 14 points per game during the playoffs.

Stackhouse played four years in Dallas, but this was the last time he had received a lot of minutes However, even past the age of 30, he has proved he has something left.

The following are some of Stackhouse’s highlights:

June 10, 2006: Jerry Stackhouse scored 19 points and had a four-point play during the decisive run in Dallas’ 99-85 victory in Game 2 of the 2006 NBA Finals over the Miami Heat.

May 15, 2006: Jerry Stackhouse scored 26 and was 10-for-19 from the field along with being a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Tim Duncan-led San Antonio Spurs in overtime, 123-118.

April 3, 2001: Stackhouse scored a career-high 57 points as a member of the Detroit Pistons against the Chicago Bulls.
