Jan 5, 2012 – The Atlanta Hawks return home from a three-game road trip with a 1-2 record but with a lot of confidence. After a loss on Saturday to the Houston Rockets, Atlanta rebounded on Monday by handing the Miami Heat their first loss of the season. On Tuesday, Atlanta led by as many as 19 points against the Chicago Bulls before a late rally and some missed free throws delivered a 76-74 win to the Bulls.

Thursday night, Atlanta returns home to open another brutal stretch of games with a rematch against the Miami Heat. The game will be the first of three straight for the Hawks who will travel to Charlotte on Friday before returning home for another matchup with the Bulls on Saturday. When the dust settles on Sunday, Atlanta will have played nine times in the first 12 days of the season which is the most of any NBA team.

In Miami on Monday, Atlanta was able to slow the pace of the game down in part by throwing a zone defense at the Heat in an effort to limit their drives to the basket and to make them a jump shooting team. LeBron James had a big game but Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade finished with sub par shooting nights.

Look for more of the same from the Hawks on Thursday as they can not afford to get in to a track meet with the Heat. For now, becoming a consistent ball club is what coach Larry Drew is looking for the most. Here is what he had to say after the win over Miami on Monday.

“If you look at this game and the game at Houston, you see two different ballclubs,” Drew said. “We have to become a more consistent ballclub. When we reach that stage, yeah, we can start talking about statements. Right now we are just trying to find ourselves as a club and get better.”

Video: Luol Deng Scores Game-Winner vs Atlanta…

Clutch.

Everyone in the building figured that Derrick Rose would be the go-to-guy last night in Chicago on the final possession, but Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau had them all fooled by designing a great last-second play for Luol Deng.

Chicago Bulls Stage Fourth Quarter Comeback, Beat…

After looking like they were in recovery mode from New Year’s celebrations, the Chicago Bulls pulled a fourth quarter miracle and beat the Atlanta Hawks, 76-74 on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Bulls climbed back from a 19-point deficit and extended their win streak to four.

Derrick Rose was the miracle worker, scoring 21 of the fourth quarter’s points. He continues to be a man on a mission and if he plays this way through the season, he could see his second MVP award.

It wasn’t a pretty win for the Bulls as they played very sluggishly and struggled with shots in the first three quarters.

The Hawks jumped on the board first and quickly took a 10-point lead. The United Center was quiet and it felt like Bulls were on the floor for practice. Some of the Bench Mob jumped in but it didn’t matter.

Atlanta finished the quarter leading 23-15.

The second quarter wasn’t much better. Atlanta grabbed its largest lead in the game to 12 points and entered halftime with a 38-26 advantage.

Expecting halftime adjustments, nothing happened in the third quarter. I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to happen at all in this game. The Bulls were cold in their shooting and watched Atlanta extend their lead.

The Hawks entered the fourth quarter 56-42. Rose woke up, hitting shots and slowly the Bulls cut down Atlanta’s lead. The Hawks were now the cold ones. Just like a runner slowly coming up behind the leader, the Bulls finally tied the game at 62, at the 6:20 mark.

With less than a minute remaining, the Bulls took their first lead of the game, 72-71 and their second one came with nine seconds remaining, 74-73.

From the Hawks’ poor free throw shooting, the Bulls got the win from a Luol Deng three-pointer.

Scoring…Rose was the leading scorer with 30 points and seven assists. Deng added 21 points with eight coming in the last four minutes.

Rip Hamilton and C.J. Watson both missed the game from injuries.

Next up? The Bulls play the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

As a lifelong Bulls fan and Chicago resident, it’s been a good era under Derrick Rose.

Deng, Rose spark Bulls’ rally over Hawks

Luol Deng’s layup with 3.7 seconds to play lifted the Chicago Bulls to a 76-74 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Derrick Rose scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to rally the Bulls from a 19-point deficit. Coming out of a timeout with the score tied in the final seconds, Deng cut along the baseline and took a feed from Joakim Noah to put Chicago ahead.

Atlanta’s Joe Johnson shot an airball at the buzzer, giving the Bulls the win.

Deng finished with 19 points for the Bulls.

Rose missed a runner with 21 seconds left, but Atlanta’s Jeff Teague missed two free throws. Rose then drove past Teague and scored over the Hawks’ Josh Smith with 9.9 seconds left to put the Bulls up 74-73.

Al Horford, who led the Hawks with 16 points, was fouled and split two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining.

Marvin Williams added 14 points and Josh Smith had 13 for Atlanta, which shot just 35 percent from the floor but held Chicago to 34 percent.

The Bulls have won four straight and their 5-1 start is their best since opening 12-0 in 1996-97.

Horford scored eight points as Atlanta extended its lead to 19 late in the third before the Bulls scored the last five points in the quarter. The Hawks led 56-42 entering the final period.

Rose, last season’s MVP, scored 11 points early in the fourth, including three 3-pointers. His pullup 3 cut Atlanta’s lead to two with 8:15 to play and capped the Bulls’ 20-3 run.

Two minutes later, Rose passed to Deng for a 3 in the corner, evening the score at 62 for the game’s first tie.

Johnson answered with a 3 of his own to spark a six-point Atlanta run. Chicago closed the gap to one on a series of free throws by Deng, setting up the stretch run.

The Bulls led the NBA in defensive efficiency last season and are in the top 10 again so far this year, but Atlanta began the day leading the league in fewest points allowed. During several stretches of the game, it looked like neither team could score.

The Hawks played in a back-to-back game for the third time in the first 10 days of the season and for the fourth time in five nights, all games in different cities.

Chicago shot 2 for 21 in the period and went more than eight minutes without a field goal during one stretch, missing 14 straight shots.
Atlanta led 38-26 at the break as Chicago scored just three points more than its franchise record for fewest points in a half, set on April 10, 1999, against Miami.

Watson missed the game with a strained left elbow suffered on Sunday. Watson is listed as day-to-day by the team but was seen before the game with his arm in a sling. . Atlanta handed Miami its first loss on Monday and was trying to knock off one of last season’s Eastern Conference finalists for the second straight night. . The Bulls, who beat the Hawks in six games in the playoffs last year, entered the game having lost seven of the last 10 regular-season meetings with Atlanta. . After a day off on Wednesday, the Hawks open a stretch of three games in three nights at home, starting with a matchup against Miami on Thursday. The last game of the stretch is against the Bulls.

Chicago Bulls rally to down Atlanta Hawks

NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose led a furious fourth-quarter rally, but it was Luol Deng who delivered the game-winner for Chicago in a 76-74 victory over Atlanta.

With the Hawks focused on Rose on Chicago’s inbounds play, Deng cut inside and collected a pass from Joakim Noah for a layup with 3.7 seconds remaining.

The Hawks, who led by as many as 19 in the third quarter, could not respond, with Joe Johnson’s jump shot at the buzzer failing to reach the rim.

The Hawks, who handed mighty Miami their first defeat of the lockout-delayed season on Monday, had appeared on their way to another victory over a lackluster Bulls team that shot just 27.3 percent from the floor through three quarters.

Rose scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter as Chicago rallied, hitting three three-pointers in a 20-3 run that knotted the score in the final period.

Noah sat out much of the fourth quarter because of foul trouble, but played a crucial role when it mattered.

“The last play of the game coach called my name and we drew up a play,” Noah said. “I know Derrick really wanted the ball in that situation, but both defenders were focused on him. I threw the pass to Lu — Lu laid it up. It was a good play.”

Coach Tom Thibodeau said the inbounds play was designed to offer several options, if, as happened, the Hawks shut down Rose.

“Derrick set a great screen, Jo made a terrific pass, Luol made a great cut,” Thibodeau said.

Deng finished with 21 points for the Bulls, whose late surge seemed unlikely as they lumbered through a first half that included 14 straight missed shots.

Despite their difficulties, Deng said the Bulls never gave up.

“We always play hard,” he said.

That’s all the news for today.

Rose cues Bulls’ comeback over the Hawks

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO — With Derrick Rose having a big fourth quarter for the Chicago Bulls, everyone expected the reigning NBA MVP to take the final shot with the score tied. Instead, it was Luol Deng who got the game-winner in the closing seconds.

Deng’s layup with 3.7 seconds left lifted the Bulls to a 76-74 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Rose scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to rally the Bulls from a 19-point deficit. Coming out of a timeout, Deng cut along the baseline and took a feed from Joakim Noah to put Chicago ahead.

“At the end of practice, we always run (the play),” Deng said. “(Joakim) made a great pass. We had a feeling both of (the defenders) would go with Derrick.”

Turns out the play was designed for Rose after all.

“Obviously, we’re trying to get it to Derrick,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “They did a good job taking the first and second option away. Derrick set a great screen, (Noah) made a great pass and Luol made a great cut.”

The play caught the Hawks off guard as they were anticipating Rose to get the last shot.

“We all assumed that the ball was coming back to Rose,” Atlanta’s Al Horford said. “We were going to come and trap. That was a great play by their coach designed to take the pressure from Rose and hit Deng on the back. We didn’t expect that at all.”

Joe Johnson shot an airball at the buzzer, giving the Bulls the win.

Deng finished with 21 points for the Bulls and scored eight over the last four minutes after Atlanta re-established a lead.

“You can’t say enough about Luol,” Thibodeau said. “He does everything.”

Rose missed a runner with 21 seconds left, but Atlanta’s Jeff Teague missed two free throws. Rose then drove past Teague and scored over the Hawks’ Josh Smith with 9.9 seconds left to put the Bulls up 74-73.

Horford, who led the Hawks with 16 points, was fouled when Deng ran into him near the top of the key. Horford split two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining, tying the score and setting up Deng’s heroics.

“We stopped defending with the intensity that we did in the first three quarters,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “We didn’t make our free throws going down the stretch. If you don’t make your free throws on the road you can’t expect to win.”

Marvin Williams added 14 points and Josh Smith had 13 for Atlanta, which shot just 35 per cent from the floor but held Chicago to 34 per cent.

The Bulls have won four straight and their 5-1 start is their best since opening 12-0 in 1996-97.

Rose scored 11 points early in the fourth, including three three-pointers. His pullup three cut Atlanta’s lead to two with 8:15 to play and capped the Bulls’ 20-3 run.

“We were right there with them,” Horford said. “We dominated for most of the game. Just Derrick Rose happened.”

Two minutes later, Rose passed to Deng for a three in the corner, evening the score at 62 for the game’s first tie.

“I was saying something the whole game, cursing and everything,” Rose said when asked if he said anything between the third and fourth quarters to fire his team up. “We got things together at the right time.”

Johnson answered with a three of his own to spark a six-point Atlanta run. Chicago closed the gap to one on a series of free throws by Deng, setting up the stretch run.

The Bulls had won three straight coming in and were coming off a 40-point rout of Memphis on Sunday but didn’t lead until Rose’s spectacular crossover move and layup to put Chicago up 72-71 with 57.9 seconds to play.

The Hawks played in a back-to-back game for the third time in the first 10 days of the season and for the fourth time in five nights, all games in different cities, so perhaps it wasn’t surprising that they faltered down the stretch.

“It was disappointing the way we started the game,” Thibodeau said. “We played a low energy game. They played great and we caught a break (because) this was the second night for them in a back to back.”

Chicago shot 2 for 21 in the second period and went more than 8 minutes without a field goal during one stretch, missing 14 straight shots.

Atlanta led 38-26 at halftime as Chicago scored just three points more than its franchise record for fewest points in a half, set on April 10, 1999, against Miami.

After winning 62 games last season, the Bulls aren’t satisfied with ugly wins this time around.

“A win is a win and it’s hard to win in this league,” Rose said. “But we know we’re 10 times better than what we showed out there. I felt bad for our fans to see us play that bad.”

NOTES: Ronnie Brewer started in place of Richard Hamilton, who sat out his second straight game with a strained left groin. Hamilton was a game-time scratch from the starting lineup. . Chicago’s C.J. Watson missed the game with a strained left elbow suffered on Sunday. Watson is listed as day-to-day by the team but was seen before the game with his arm in a sling. . Atlanta handed Miami its first loss on Monday and was trying to knock off one of last season’s Eastern Conference finalists for the second straight night. . After a day off on Wednesday, the Hawks open a stretch of three games in three nights at home, starting with a matchup against Miami on Thursday. The last game of the stretch is against the Bulls.

Jan 3, 2012 – Fresh off of a road victory over the Miami Heat, the Atlanta Hawks travel to Chicago to close out a three game road trip with a playoff rematch against the Chicago Bulls.

Derrick Rose and the Bulls knocked the Hawks out of last season’s playoffs 4-2 in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Both teams will enter Tuesday’s matchup with 4-1 records. Atlanta suffered its first loss on Saturday to the Houston Rockets but bounced back on Monday to hand the Miami Heat their first loss of the season.

Tracy McGrady and the new look Hawks bench was a big factor in the Hawks win with McGrady scoring 16 points and coming up with some key baskets at crunch time for Atlanta.

Chicago is coming off of its most impressive victory to date. The Bulls hammered the Memphis Grizzlies 101-61 on Sunday and enjoyed an off day on Monday to prepare for Atlanta. Chicago’s only loss this season came on December 26 on the road against the Golden State Warriors.

This game will be another opportunity for Hawks point guard Jeff Teague to match up with last season’s MVP Derrick Rose who is averaging 19.8 points and 8.6 assists per game this season. Teague scored 13 of his 15 points against the Heat in the first half but his aggressiveness early was key for the Hawks.

Quick Glance: Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls will try to extend a three-game winning steak when they square off against the Atlanta Hawks tonight at the United Center in Chicago. Without further ado, here’s your quick glance advance.

Game time: 8 p.m. EST.

TV: Local coverage in the Atlanta and Chicago areas (check your listings), NBA-TV.

The Hawks: The Hawks were 44-38 last season, good enough for the East’s fifth seed. They upset the Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the Bulls in the semifinals. The Hawks swapped Jamal Crawford for Tracy McGrady, but otherwise have about the same rotation as last season.

Last Season vs. Bulls: The Hawks and Bulls met three times during the regular season, and in an Eastern Conference semifinals matchup. The Bulls blew out two of the regular season games, then dispatched the Hawks in six during the playoffs.

Statistics

PPG: Atlanta 99.2 (8); Chicago 101.0 (6).

FG%: Atlanta 45.3 (T12); Chicago 46.3 (7).

PPG Allowed: Atlanta 87.6 (1); Chicago 89.8 (6).

Assists: Atlanta 20.2 (19); Chicago 23.0 (4).

Rebounds/offensive – Atlanta 42.8 (14)/11.8 (T10); Chicago 45.8 (6)/14.0 (3).

Probable starters

PG – Jeff Teague (13.4 ppg, 4.8 apg, 58% FG) vs. Derrick Rose (19.8 ppg, 8.6 apg): Rising star Teague played well against Rose in last season’s playoff series, but Rose was better with five double-doubles and a spiffy 29.8 ppg/9.8 apg average in the six-game set.

SG – Joe Johnson (17.2 ppg) vs. Rip Hamilton/Ronnie Brewer (12 ppg): Hamilton sat out the Memphis game with a sore groin, Brewer filled in nicely with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Johnson leads the Hawks in scoring.

SF – Marvin Williams (11.8 ppg, 6 rpg) vs. Luol Deng (17 ppg, 7.6 rpg): Williams, a part-time starter last season, averaged just 3.5 ppg against Deng in the playoffs.

PF – Josh Smith (10 ppg, 7 rpg) vs. Carlos Boozer (12.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg): Boozer is coming off his best game of the season; Smith had a great playoff series, but his scoring is down from nearly 17 ppg last season.

C – Al Horford (12.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg) vs. Joakim Noah (9.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg): The Hawks give the Bulls trouble when Horford plays well; he averaged 20 ppg and 11.3 rpg in three wins over the Bulls last season.

The Write-Up

Both teams are 4-1 and coming off their best games of the year: The Bulls won a 114-64 laugher over Memphis Sunday, the Hawks upset the Heat, 100-92, in Miami last night. I watched the Hawks-Heat game and must admit, Atlanta looked better than I expected or predicted. I love Teague; he’s shooting nearly 60% since becoming a starter and has developed into the Hawks second leading scorer. McGrady, the new sixth man, is chipping in with 11.6 ppg – he hit two huge fourth-quarter three-pointers against the Heat – so Crawford hasn’t been missed much. Chicago is averaging 108.7 points during its three-game winning streak; the Hawks currently have the league’s best scoring defense. Fatigue might be a factor; the Bulls enter the game after a day off while the Hawks are closing out a three-game road trip and a stretch of four games in five nights.

Notes: The Bulls play four games in the next five nights….. C.J. Watson was sans sling yesterday, according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, but was still wearing a wrap on the elbow he sprained Sunday night. He’s listed as day to day. Meanwhile, Rip Hamilton practiced…… What do you think of the new format for game advances? Is there anything you’d like to see added? Let me know!

Coming tomorrow: Make sure to look for my Central Division preview!

long-awaited home opener Sunday night against Memphis, and didn’t disappoint the
United Center fans. The Bulls jumped out to a 26-point halftime advantage, led
by as much as 46 in the third quarter and cruised to a 104-64 victory.

The game was so lopsided, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah spent more time on
the bench than on the court and Derrick Rose played just 25 minutes.

There were a few concerns for the Bulls, though, as starting shooting guard
Richard Hamilton was scratched shortly before tip-off with a sore left groin and
backup point guard C.J. Watson sprained his left elbow late in the game.
Hamilton will likely be a game-time decision against the Hawks (4-1), while
Watson is unlikely to play.

Ronnie Brewer, who started in place of Hamilton, and Boozer led the Bulls
with 17 points apiece Sunday and Rose finished with 16 points and six assists.
Chicago is averaging 108.7 points during its three-game winning streak, while
outrebounding opponents by an average of 9.3 boards.

“I thought we had chance to win (the championship) last year. I think we
have a chance to win this year,” Boozer told the Bulls’ official website. “We’re
going to have a chance every year. Aside from Olympics and All-Star teams, this
is the most talented team I’ve been on in the NBA.”

Boozer and the Bulls got past Indiana and Atlanta in last season’s playoffs
before being eliminated by Miami in five games.

The Heat opened this season with five straight victories and went into
Monday’s game against Atlanta coming off a 39-point win over Charlotte the night
before, but couldn’t keep their perfect record intact as the Hawks won 100-92.

Joe Johnson had 21 points and Tracy McGrady hit a pair of 3-pointers in the
final 2:26 of the fourth quarter and scored 13 of his 16 points in the final
period. Al Horford also had 16 points for the Hawks, who finished with a
season-low 10 turnovers.

“Great execution,” McGrady said. “That’s what you have to do when you’re
playing great teams.”

Atlanta will see two of the Eastern Conference’s top teams this week.

After facing Chicago, the Hawks return home to open a back-to-back-to-back
stretch with a rematch against the Heat on Thursday. They’ll then play in
Charlotte the next night and conclude the three games in three nights stretch
Saturday at home against the Bulls.

Atlanta took Game 1 of last season’s playoff series with Chicago at the
United Center, but the Bulls went on to win the series in six games. Rose led
Chicago, averaging 29.8 points and 9.8 assists.

Johnson scored 34 on 12-of-18 shooting in upsetting the Bulls in Game 1, but
averaged 16.8 points in the other five games.
